Bergslagen

The Bergslagen region in the central part of Sweden is named after the extensive mining conducted in the area, with roots going as far back as the early middle ages. Remnants of mining activities, such as exhausted mine pits and bergmansgårdar (manors built by wealthy farmers who owned shares in mines), can be found throughout the region. Even to this day metal and forest based industries constitute the back bone of the region’s economy. Apart from providing natural resources, the natural landscape in the region also offers a unique blend of the natural habitat of northern and southern Sweden, making it a miniature version of the country. As a result of the beautiful sceneries and living history, a vivid cultural life and an array of outdoor activities the region is also a popular tourist destination.

Team Region Bergslagen entering the European cycling challenge consists of four municipalities Avesta (22 022), Fagersta (13 133), Hedemora (15 085) and Norberg (5 719), together amounting to circa 56 000 inhabitants. Each municipality of course unique, but still sharing a common history and the same conditions when it comes to cycling; quaint city centers with sparsely populated and rather vast rural areas surrounding them.
