Hasselt

Hasselt is situated in the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium and is the capital of the province of Limburg.  Thanks to its location, it is not only oriented towards Belgium but also towards the Euro region ; a three-country zone comprised of Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands.

Sustainable mobility is top priority for Hasselt.  We discourage cars in the centre of the city to provide a safe environment for pedestrians and cycling.  We offer public transport at an affordable price, encourage cycling by implementing cycle parking, bike points (you can hire a bike here) and a cycle bar (where you can get your bike engraved, have minor repairs done),integration with public transport,  improving the cycling infrastructure, introducing electric buses and cars to reduce emissions of VOC’s, organising awareness campaigns such as a car-free Sunday in town.  Limburg already earned a reputation as a cycling paradise with a 2000 kms low traffic network and we strive to do even better in future.

If you’re into historical buildings, art, fashion, exclusive shops, a drink in a cosy or posh coffee house or even a champaign bar, culinary encounters, Hasselt is definitely worthwhile considering for a city trip as we’ve got it all.

You can check in in one of our many hotels or B&B’s, enjoy a tasty coffee served by a barista while you make up your mind on how to spend your time.
For instance, you could start with a visit to the Fashion museum which got reviews in the international press and later on feast your eyes in one of our renowned fashion shops, take a break in one of our “happy” places, while tasting some unique art projects in the streets of Hasselt or admire street art.

If art isn’t really your thing, you could go to the skate park, have a boat trip on the Albert Canal, a balloon ride over Hasselt,  or you could hire a bike at the bike point and visit the Japanese garden, the Herkenrode Abbey Site where you can enjoy some peace in the herb and inspiration garden, its quiet view, its apiary, or Kiewit with its farm for children.

Oh, and before you leave, and we’re confident that you’ll be back to taste some more, don’t forget to take our typical jenever, speculaas, chocolates.
