Prague 9 is a Prague’s borough, situated in the north-east area from the centre, with its extend of 1.386 ha . On the 1.1.2015, it had 55.068 citizens (8.969 permanent living foreigners including).
The traffic situation is steadily worsening in Prague 9 due to the increasing intensity of road transport and the delayed completion of the superior communication system of the City of Prague (City Ring, following road radials, Outer Ring). Three out of Prague’s main slip roads and highways directed to the north, north-east, and east are connected close to Prague 9. That is why plenty of cars just pass through Prague 9 every day in their way to the centre and back. With the delay of buses and trams in traffic congestion, availability of a car and the prevailing lifestyle in the metropolis, there is a further shift away from public transport towards individual transport. Despite the relatively recent completion of the subway lines and their launching in the direction of districts Hloubětín and Letňany, the volume of passengers transported by public transportation system is stagnant. The remaining systems in the area, i.e. walking and cycling transport are still missing a completed communication system in a way that would allow a surface permeability of the area without having to navigate within the corridors intended primarily for motor traffic. Municipality of Prague 9 is aware of all these facts and treats the traffic issue as one of the main important problems to solve. Municipality of Prague 9 endeavours to support sustainable transport projects, such as support of providing public transport information, organizing bicycle trips and traffic education for children in cooperation with the police, parking space management and other. We are glad, that we could accept the challenge and be a part of the European Cycling Challenge in 2015.
